The Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival is now calling for submissions for the 2013 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival Commission. Previous commissions have resulted in the creation of extraordinary new works by Tilman Robinson, Gian Slater, Fran Swinn, Jex Saarelaht, Colin Hopkins, Erik Griswold, and Ren Walters, consistently proving to be an important annual event for creative music in Australia.

The Commission provides $1500 to a composer to write an extended work of at least 30 minutes for an ensemble (greater than five piece) of his or her choice and also provides rehearsal and performance fees for up to ten ensemble players. The commissioned work is to be presented at the 2013 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival, on Sunday May 5th, 2013 at Northcote Town Hall.

Interested parties are asked to provide the following:

  •  A description of their proposal clearly outlining the ideas behind the composition and how the idea will be realized (intended instrumentation, musicians, etc.) on one A4 page (font size 12 pt minimum).
  • A brief biography on one A4 page (font size 12 p minimum).
  • Audio support material up to 25 minutes in length (two tracks maximum).

In preparing their proposal, applicants may like to consider the following questions:

  • What is fringe?
  • How does your practice relate to fringe?
  • How will this commission be different from other work you have done?
  • What would this commission allow you to create that you would not be able to develop otherwise?
  • What outcomes and possibilities do you envisage for the work after its performance?

The proposal and biography should be emailed to info@melbournejazzfringe.com. Audio support material should either be hosted online (ie. Soundcloud), with links clearly labeled and provided via email, or sent on a CD to:
